Book Review: New Catatan Hati Seorang Istri

Cinta,
air mata yang kusembunyikan di balik senyum
dan berselimut sujud di malam-malam panjang
adalah isyarat pada luka
atas cintamu yang diam-diam
menyelinap pergi…

Love,
tears I hid behind a smile
and covered in prostration in long nights
are cues to the wound
for your love that secretly
slipped away …

Those are the words written on the cover of the book “New Catatan Hati Seorang Istri”. I recently bought this book when I heard directly from the author, Mbak Asma Nadia, that there are some books that she recommended to be read prior to getting married. When I bought the book, it is already in new version because the first version (Catatan Hati Seorang Istri) had actually been published several years ago.

This book is a collection of short stories based on true experiences of wives in Indonesia, as well as those who live abroad, who were facing unexpected problems in their home. There is a story of a wife whose husband was about to do polygamy, a story of wife intimidated by rude words and trying to stay and not divorce, and many other stories that make us, reader, shocked, sad, and realized that some realities are just so unexpected. However, there are always messages of wisdom that we got from every story being told, either implicitly or explicitly.

Beside stories that brought us feel sad, sorry and made us want to pray for them to be strong, there are also touching stories. For example, a story of a harmonious family, but after 11 years of marriage they lost the husband, fell asleep forever in his wife’s shoulder right after praying.

Various advices are also included in this book. One was from the story of a married couple who have a sakinah family until they reached their old age.

“If your spouse make mistake, embrace and forgive quickly. Make yourself where your soul mate is always longing to go home, as he knows that he will always be welcomed with your open heart.” – Ene ‘(Grandmother).

There are around 30 stories summarized in the form of an eye-opening story to anyone who read that sometimes to live happily ever after like in the fairy tale does not happen. It is worth reading for women who have or haven’t been married so we can always be grateful and patient. However, it is also recommended for men who have or haven’t been married and want to respect his wife someday.
